She is deeply committed to community-engaged research that addresses systemic health inequities impacting Black communities in Canada. Arista has previously conducted research at Dr. Nicholas Rule’s Social Perception and Cognition Lab as well as for Professor Kevin O’Neill at the Department for the Study of Religion. Beyond research, her longstanding commitment to Black communities is demonstrated through her leadership as Co-President of the Black Student Association at Etobicoke School of the Arts. She’s also had the opportunity to speak at the Canadian Black Scientist Network’s 2023 BE-STEMM conference, working with Dr. Maydianne Andrade to support Black youth pursuing STEMM pathways. Additionally, she was awarded the SSHRC Black Student Undergraduate Research Award the summer of 2025 in recognition of her research and commitment to equity-focused scholarship. She is eager to apply her skills toward health equity initiatives and is particularly excited by BHEL’s focus on translating research into accessible public messaging and tools for advocacy.
